  • Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test – One Pack (1).

If you want to save money and still test early for pregnancy, buy the one-pack of the Family Dollar pregnancy test.

If you feel uneasy buying the store brand test, buy either the Clearblue or the First Response product.

Does sensitivity matter?

Testing early, sensitivity and accuracy are all related. If you test early, you need a test that’s sensitive to less HCG. You should, however, exect to lose accuracy because more women have a chance of having low HCG without being pregnant.

Here’s a summary of what we know about pregnancy tests at Family Dollar:

First Response

CHURCH & DWIGHT CO., INC. owns the trademark to the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test. The FDA approved this product in Document Number K123436.

According to the FDA,

The FIRST RESPONSE® Early Result Pregnancy Test is an over-the-counter chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. The device is intended for use as an aid in early detection of pregnancy, in some cases as early as five (5) days before the expected period, i.e., as early as six (6) days before the day of the missed period.

Regarding sensitivity:

The analytical sensitivity of the new device (the lowest concentration that yields 100% positive results) is 10 mIU/mL and the cut-off level (at which approximately half of the devices yield positive results and the remainder yield negative results) is 6 mIU/mL.

Clearblue

Abbott, a Chinese contract manufacturer, produces the Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test with Smart Countdown (available at Family Dollar). Proctor & Gamble distributes the Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test for SPD Swiss Precision Diagnostics GmbH. Unipath Ltd. manufactures the device.

The cut off HCG level for this device is 9.6 MIU/mL. At this point, 53% of pregnant women receive an accurate result. The lowest concentration that yields a positive reslt for pregnancy is 25 mIU/mL.

According to Clearblue’s product brochure (read it here), most women have an HCG concentration of 50 mIU/mL by the first day of their missed period. According to FDA document number K060128, the Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test has a sensitivity cutoff of 9-10 mIU/ML. Check out the FDA’s “AccessData” entry for the product HERE.

According to SPD Swiss Precision Diagnostices, this test…

Can be used 5 days before your missed period (which is 4 days before your expected period). In lab testing, pregnancy detection rates were: >99% one day before the expected period, 95% 2 days before, 98% 3 days before, and 75% 4 days before (5 days earlier than your missed period).

This product, listed by the FDA as Midwood Brands, LLC, Family Wellness Early Result Pregnancy Test, offers you a value-priced way to test early.

Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech Co., Ltd. manufactures the product and sells it under the Wondfo brand. Midwood brands distributes the product under Family Dollar’s “Family Wellness” brand.
